(DALLAS, TX; McKINNEY, TX); September 25, 2020 – On Thursday, September 24, the SPCA of Texas relocated six homeless animals impacted by Hurricane Laura at the request of the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and the Calcasieu Parish Animal Services (CPAS). The animals, including one pig, one dog, two kittens and two cats, were transferred to the SPCA of Texas’ Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center and the SPCA of Texas’ Russell H. Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney. The SPCA of Texas collaborated with the ASPCA and CPAS to transport these animals from Louisiana – either homeless before the storm hit or surrendered after the storm – to make room for displaced pets, free up local resources in the impacted communities, and to give these animals a better chance of adoption. The animals will be evaluated for adoption or placement on a case-by-case basis at the SPCA of Texas.

The transport comes after SPCA of Texas responders spent a week on the ground in Lake Charles, La. helping provide care for animals at an emergency shelter operated by the ASPCA at the request of CPAS, as a portion of their adoption center was severely damaged by the storm.
“The SPCA of Texas is proud to partner with the ASPCA to provide the much needed support to the community by assisting Calcasieu Parish Animal Services while they recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Laura,” said Karen Froehlich, President and CEO for the SPCA of Texas. “We are glad to go the extra mile for animals in need and welcome these homeless pets into our care.”
“The ASPCA is grateful for our partner shelters like SPCA of Texas who are not only essential in supporting our direct disaster response work, but have gone above and beyond by supporting Calcasieu Parish Animals Services and taking in homeless animals impacted by Hurricane Laura,” said Jessica Rushin, director of ASPCA Placement Partnerships. “Collaboration is a lifesaving component of disaster relief efforts, and we thank SPCA of Texas for helping to provide essential care for animals in need.”
