When Xerria Smith started volunteering with the SPCA of Texas, she was just looking for a way to help. Shift after shift, she made the long drive to spend time with animals who needed patience and consistency. Over less than a year, she gave more than 300 hours, often choosing to work with dogs who needed extra attention. That level of dedication stood out. Xerria was recognized for her commitment with a $48,000 scholarship, awarded to support young people making a difference through service. She plans to use it to attend the University of Houston and pursue her goal of becoming a veterinarian.
