Lorraine is a 6-month-old puppy who came to us through another shelter. She is an under socialized young dog who is finding the shelter environment overwhelming and would greatly benefit from the comfort and stability of a foster home.
During her assessment, Lorraine remained tucked into the back corner of her kennel between her bed and the wall. Her handler gave her the space she needed by sitting quietly with their back turned, allowing Lorraine to observe without feeling pressured. After several minutes, she began to relax, easing away from the wall and softening her body posture.
As treats were gently tossed nearby, Lorraine readily accepted them, beginning to form positive associations with her handler. Over the course of the session, she showed increasing confidence by standing to eat from her food bowl and later approaching a piece of ham placed between herself and the handler.
These small steps demonstrate Lorraine’s willingness to build trust when she is given patience, consistency, and the opportunity to move at her own pace. She would thrive in a calm, quiet foster home where she can continue gaining confidence away from the stress of the shelter.
With time, gentle care, and a peaceful environment, Lorraine has every opportunity to continue making progress and discover what it means to feel safe, if you have the time and space to help Lorraine please email Foster@spca.org
