Barley is a 6-month-old puppy who came to us through another shelter. She is an under socialized young dog who is struggling to adjust to the shelter environment, where the constant noise and activity can be overwhelming.
Barley initially retreated to the back corner of her kennel and avoided interaction. Her handler gave her the time and space she needed, quietly sitting in the kennel and using treats to build trust. Over the course of the session, Barley began accepting treats, gradually moved closer, relaxed and her body language became much softer and by the end was comfortable resting on the same side of the kennel as her handler.
These are encouraging signs that Barley is capable of making progress when given patience, consistency, and a calm environment. She would greatly benefit from a quiet foster home where she can decompress, build confidence at her own pace, and continue learning that people are safe and trustworthy.
If you can offer Barley, the space, she needs to start opening up and learning please email Foster@spca.org!
