(DALLAS, TX; September 18, 2020) – Today, September 18, the SPCA of Texas deployed a team to assist the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) at an emergency animal shelter in Lake Charles, Louisiana to provide care for animals displaced by Hurricane Laura, which devastated the area at the end of August.

The ASPCA is operating the emergency shelter at the request of Calcasieu Animal Services, as their adoption center was damaged by the storm. SPCA of Texas first responders will be on the ground for a week, providing animal care and behavioral and medical support as needed to animals that have been displaced by the hurricane. Many of these animals are waiting to be reunited with their families.
Homeless animals – including those surrendered after the storm – will eventually be transported to ASPCA placement partners where they will be made available for adoption. The SPCA of Texas plans to return to Dallas, Texas next week with a group of animals that are determined to be unowned to allow the shelter to make more space for displaced pets.
The SPCA of Texas will release more information about the animals coming to Dallas as it becomes available. More information about the operations in Louisiana can be found here.
