Back to School with Four-Legged Friends

It’s that time of year all families know well – back to school! This year, things are different for most students and families either physically returning to school or starting the year in a virtual classroom at home, but there are some ways your pets can help your child get back in the swing of things regardless of how they might be learning differently this year.

• Students returning in-person may enjoy being accompanied by their four-legged friend during their walk or car ride to school to have some encouragement before their day. Or, surprise your child when picking them up with their pet ready to greet them!

• When students come home from school, try making a family evening walk with the dog a habit. Because many kids are not able to participate in after-school activities or hang out with friends, spending time with their pet can keep them company and feeling entertained.

• For students learning at home, consider incorporating pets into their studies. Have your child practice reading to their pet or write about their pet. Pets are great listeners, and most will be happy to be included in the day’s lessons.

• Children who are staying home can stay active by playing with their pet for at least 15 to 30 minutes a day. Not only will this provide your child with healthy exercise, but it will also keep your pet happy and in-shape, too!
