In this Thanksgiving season, we at the SPCA of Texas immediately think of the legion of individuals and organizations that make the work we do possible. Everyone from large financial donors down to high school students gathering used blankets and other needed supplies plays a vital role.
We are grateful for every one of them.
The past year has been a challenging one in many respects. The biggest headwind thrown our way would definitely be the distemper epidemic that struck North Texas this year. When it reared its head in medical tests among our population of dogs, we needed to take every step possible to protect our canine population. We consulted with top experts in the field, and thanks to our donors we were able to implement a gold standard protocol for locking down our facilities and containing the spread of this potentially lethal disease. It took a lot of supplies and adjusting; even going as far as constructing a temporary intake facility in our employee parking lot.
We also started providing the community with Drive-Thru Pet Pantry events each month. The pandemic and ensuing economic uncertainty have caused a lot of hardship on a wide swath of pet owners. We believe that pets in loving and responsible homes should not fall victim to economic hardships and are dedicated to do all we can to keep them there.
Through food donations, vaccinations, and low cost spay/neuter services we can make a big difference for the pet population. And once again, our donors make it possible.
Every facet of our operation, down to the very buildings our adoptable pets reside in, comes from generosity. We do our best to remember this as we go about our tasks each and every day.
This year we have resumed and expanded our Donor Experience program. We hope to meet and get to know each and every one of our donors on a more personal level through these events. They can range from happy hours to lectures or even learning to paint our pets on canvas. To find out more about what is coming up in this series, feel free to reach out at development@spca.org.
We have also put a new emphasis on our Group Experiences. Through this program, an office or organization can come in and be a part of our shelter operation. It is a great team-building opportunity, and a chance to get real insight on the operations of the SPCA of Texas. There are a range of group opportunities available, and a listing of them is available in the volunteer section of our website.
Of course our core mission of rescuing animals, bringing them back to health and rehoming them to loving families remains our primary focus. Our Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit, medical and animal care teams remain vigilant and busy. We have had many “Happy Tails” to share with our staff and supporters over the past year, and we look forward to many more to come. We are very thankful to be able to do this work, and we know who really makes it all possible.
For every contribution, we offer a sincere round of “Thanks!” from all of us.
