When you think of Texas, you can’t help but envision someone in a plaid shirt, cowboy boots and a Stetson hat sitting casually atop a majestic horse. That vision isn’t just a stereotype, it’s a reality! Texans love their horses, and the SPCA of Texas is committed to rehoming both horses in transition and rehabilitating rescue horses. It’s part of our mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome creatures of all shapes, sizes and species in order to provide every animal with exceptional care and a loving home!
At the Russell H. Perry Animal Care Center in McKinney, Texas, we have equines of all types! Some have just found themselves in between owners due to no fault of their own, and some have been rescued from cruelty or neglect circumstances by our Animal Cruelty Investigations unit.
Thanks to a generous grant from The Right Horse Initiative, the SPCA of Texas is proud to have adopted out 140 horses in 2018! That is a huge increase over 2017’s total of 67. We’re so incredibly proud of our Equine and Livestock team for working so hard to rehabilitate and train these incredible animals, and to our veterinary team for nursing our rescued horses back to health!
With the help of The Right Horse, the SPCA of Texas is committed to finding new homes for the horses that come into our care, no matter their role or where they came from. Companion horses, trail horses, retired racehorses, and event horses all get personal attention from experienced trainers, groomers and veterinarians so that they can be in the best shape possible before they are made available for adoption. We have donkeys, mules and mini horses too! When you adopt from the SPCA of Texas, you are getting an unbelievably great deal, not to mention the knowledge that you are giving a perfectly good horse a chance at a new life!
All SPCA of Texas horses have negative Coggins results, have been on a regular deworming and farrier schedule, and are current on vaccinations. If you are interested in adopting, please visit the SPCA of Texas website, www.spca.org/livestock, to fill out an application. Once your application is approved, our equine staff will contact you to schedule an appointment, or you may contact us at 214-461-1933. Appointments are required to ensure staff is available to help you decide which horse is the best fit for you.
