With inflation impacting gas, groceries and energy costs, many pet owners and rescue organizations are finding it difficult to afford healthy pet food for their furry family members and foster animals. How heartbreaking would it be to have to surrender your best friend just because you couldn’t afford to feed them?
Over the past two weeks, the SPCA of Texas has collaborated with 11 local animal rescue organizations, seven area food banks and four area animal control agencies to help get much needed pet food and supplies into the hands of pet parents and foster families who desperately need it.
“In the past 6 months DF2FM has seen an increase in pet food need exceeding 40%,” says Maria Koegl, Director of Don’t Forget 2 Feed Me. “This increase translates to purchasing 95,000% more pet food compared to the same time frame in 2021. Thanks to SPCA’s amazing dog food donation of 3,275 pounds, DF2FM is able to provide 13,100 pet meals. Donations like this are the reason we can continue to feed pets in difficult times.”
Together with the SPCA of Texas Russell Perry Pet Resource Center, this collaborative pet food distribution network has made sure that more than 2,150 owned and foster pets will have full bellies for the next several weeks. We hope to continue this pet food and supply collaborative network throughout the summer to help keep pets happy, healthy and fed.
“I want to say thank you for the donation that was given to us, and it’s because of donations like these that we are able to continue to serve the community,” said Francisco Villanueva Castelan, client relations lead for Operation Kindness. “Today was a busy day for us and with your donation everyone was able to receive food for their fur babies. Our mission is to help those in need so they don’t have to surrender their dogs or cats just because they couldn’t afford food.
“With your donations, SPCA was also able to help with that mission. I had a customer today who lost her job and was having trouble feeding her dogs; she was crying of enjoyment when she saw Kamryn (community outreach assistant) pull up with a cart full of food for her dogs. It is moments like these that we love to see, and we truly feel the impact of our partners’ donations.”
