Vaccinations for young animals are a necessary building block in the foundation of your pet’s immune system, and boosters for adult dogs and cats are essential to provide continued protection for common diseases throughout your pet’s lifetime.

Following a proper vaccination schedule will help to ensure that you are doing your part to keep your new friend healthy.

Puppies need four rounds of vaccines and kittens need three. They should ideally start between 6-8 weeks of age, however if you receive your pet after that time you should get them started as soon as possible. The boosters should be given 3-4 weeks apart with the last vaccination given at 16 weeks or older. A complete set of boosters is necessary because puppies and kittens immune systems are continuing to develop as their mother’s protective antibodies wear off. Because of this, a single vaccine may not provide complete immunity against several deadly viruses.

SPCA of Texas’ veterinarians may recommend a different vaccination schedule or additional vaccines based on your pets age, lifestyle and past history.
