If any dogs test positive for Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) at the shelter, we are immediately isolating them at our medical teams counsel and attempting to get them into a foster home. Since distemper positive dogs can shed the virus to other dogs for up to 3 months, they need to be isolated for that entire period or they pose a risk to other dogs at the shelter.

We’re thrilled to announce that we have been awarded a $50,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to support the organization’s adoptions of cats and kittens at North Texas PetSmart® stores. On average, more than 1,600 cats and kittens are adopted at PetSmart stores through the SPCA of Texas each year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SPCA of Texas had fewer cats available at the stores so far this year. With this grant, the SPCA of Texas is able to scale back up the number of adoptable cats at PetSmart stores, which will in turn increase the SPCA of Texas’ capacity and ability to rescue more kittens that would otherwise have had lived on the streets or in other shelters.
This grant will fund the necessary care to prepare 500 cats and kittens for adoption at PetSmart stores, including the cost of spay/neuter, vaccinations, medical care, supplies and more. With more cats and kittens adopted from PetSmart stores, the SPCA of Texas will be able to increase the intake of cats and kittens and save more lives.
