If any dogs test positive for Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) at the shelter, we are immediately isolating them at our medical teams counsel and attempting to get them into a foster home. Since distemper positive dogs can shed the virus to other dogs for up to 3 months, they need to be isolated for that entire period or they pose a risk to other dogs at the shelter.

Beginning August 24th, the SPCA of Texas helped over 600 South Texas pets affected by Hurricane Harvey. We transferred more than 200 adoptable shelter pets from groups along the gulf coast to our shelters, where we treated them and put them up for adoption; helped transport more than 200 more to other shelters; and offered long-term housing and care for more than 200 pets of evacuees at both the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center and at an emergency animal shelter at the old Reunion Arena parking garage next to the Mega Shelter for evacuees in Dallas that we built and ran for one month.
And after that, we helped families reconnect with their pets as they returned home.
With our commitment to offer help to Texas pets in crisis, we have spent the last year evaluating our response to Hurricane Harvey. We are deeply proud of the assistance we provided and we are dedicated to further enhancing our disaster response protocols so that when the next crisis occurs, we can help even more pets and their people.
