If any dogs test positive for Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) at the shelter, we are immediately isolating them at our medical teams counsel and attempting to get them into a foster home. Since distemper positive dogs can shed the virus to other dogs for up to 3 months, they need to be isolated for that entire period or they pose a risk to other dogs at the shelter.

At the SPCA of Texas, our veterinary technicians care for all species of animals, many of which come to us from our Animal Cruelty Investigations unit. Due to this, our vet techs encounter new challenges and opportunities for learning on a daily basis. Just last week, our vet techs examined several different types of animals after they were seized from an allegedly cruel situation.
“A person adopted a pet from another shelter and later came to us due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. Dr. Cobb-Sinnie had us x-ray, which later turned into exploratory surgery. Dr. Heinefield, Dr. Brandon, Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Cobb-Sinnie helped this sweet, chocolate lab puppy. The owner was patiently waiting throughout the entire procedure. It was late in the afternoon, but the owner was beyond thankful. We were all happy to see that it was a successful outcome! The pup was brought in later as one of our regular patients. Seeing this puppy come back energetic and healthy made us feel rewarded, which is why we help animals every day.”
