Shian came to SPCA of Texas as part of a cruelty case in November 2018. She was scared and lacked proper socialization, but this feisty miniature pinscher made sure to let everyone know she was the boss!
Throughout the course of almost a year, Shian built trust with certain staff members and got to spend time in a loving foster home where her true personality started to shine- affectionate, playful, and spunky! Those who could earn her trust immediately fell in love with her.
Back at the shelter, it became increasingly difficult to find Shian a permanent home due to her wariness of strangers. We knew how great she was in a home, but in the shelter she didn’t make great first impressions with potential adopters. We needed someone to take a chance on this special girl and allow her to adjust at her own pace!
Last Thursday we received an inquiry on Shian from the Waterman’s, a lovely couple living in Fargo, North Dakota. They’d been looking for a min pin to rescue after losing theirs several months prior, but none of the rescues they contacted would adopt out of state. Their beloved min pin had a very similar personality to Shian’s, and they had fostered many others like her in the past.
The Waterman’s were familiar with the breed and were fully committed. However due to their distance and the fact that Shian wasn’t suitable for air travel, it would take some time to coordinate their 15+ hour drive to come get her.
Then our foster manager had an “aha” moment- she was traveling to Nebraska the next day! With her destination so much closer to Fargo, she asked if the couple would be able to clear their schedule the following day and meet her half way in Nebraska. They said yes!
Shian endured the road trip and meet & greet like a champ and the Waterman’s knew she was meant to be theirs. They adopted Shian and took her home, on the day that happened to be their 16th wedding anniversary.
Shian, now Duchess, is living her best life in Fargo along with her new parents and 3 doggy siblings. She couldn’t be happier, and our hearts are full that she finally got the happy ending she deserved!
Shian’s journey wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our wonderful fosters. If you want to help animals like Shian by opening your heart and your home to a foster pet, please visit spca.org/foster to learn more!
