Your first time volunteering can be kind of daunting. You want to make a difference in your community, but what if you mess up? What if no one talks to you? What if you’re not actually helping?
Nearly every first time volunteer feels these sensations of apprehension. Thankfully, the SPCA of Texas volunteers want to reassure new recruits that there’s no need to worry!
Here are some words of wisdom from our volunteers:
“Don’t be afraid to start! It’s easy to believe you aren’t emotionally strong enough to see the hard parts of working in an animal shelter, but all of that fades away when you see the happy, smiling faces of the animals that you provide care and enrichment for! It truly does make such a difference in their lives ” – Vanessa
“Go with your passion and fuel your fire while you are volunteering. Do what makes you happy while you are here. Fulfill your yourself. No matter what you do you are helping our organization and you are appreciated beyond words!” – Terri
“Don’t be sad! Sad ended the day they came to the SPCA of Texas. Animals now have hope and a future, and the volunteers get to be part of that.” – Tara
“Don’t judge a dog by how it behaves behind a glass wall. Get to know each one outside where they can breathe and feel more free. I used to be scared to walk the anxious barkers until I realized this by experience.” – Anne
“The animals need you! And you will make friends for life.” – Tom
