It’s National Mutt Day, y’all! We loves big mutts, small mutts, mutt puppies and senior mutts!
One thing that we have a challenge with at the SPCA of Texas is figuring out what breeds make up a mutt when they come into our care. Sometimes a dog might look like a perfect mix of a chihuahua and a Boston terrier, only to find out once the doggie DNA kit comes back from their adopter that we were WAY off!
Obviously we can’t perform a DNA test on all our pups, so sometimes our estimates are way off. We tend to think that’s okay though – a dog is so much more than their appearance! You’ll see the phrase “mixed breed” more and more from shelters as we are all slowly realizing how difficult it is to try and guess a dog’s breed off of a quick visual evaluation.
So when you’re looking around a shelter for your next pet, don’t pay too much attention to their breed. If you make a connection with an animal, chances are it’s their personality that drew you in. Maybe you came in looking for a shih tzu, or a golden retriever, but a wiggly terrier mix catches your eye. Take a chance to meet that mutt and maybe you’ll find your new companion!
