The SPCA of Texas’ Pet Resource Center (PRC) is designed to support pet owners who are at risk of having to surrender their pets. The Pet Resource Center team works to provide alternatives to surrender and resources that may help owners keep their pets in their homes and out of local streets and shelters. This service has been incredibly important to pet owners in North Texas during the COVID-19 crisis. During 2020, over 1,700 pets received assistance to stay safe and in their loving homes – pets like Gnocchi.
When Gnocchi was rescued at from an abandoned home in 2019, he had two corneal ulcers and a severe skin infection due to the neglect he suffered at the beginning of his life. After an initial visit to the vet, it was determined Gnocchi would require special medicine and that he may have lifelong issues with weepy eyes and skin infections.
The effect of the pandemic was really hard on Gnocchi’s humans. Both his parents lost their jobs and suddenly found themselves unable to get his medicine refilled. When Gnocchi’s eye started to leak very badly, they felt lost and unable to help their best bud out.
That is until Gnocchi’s mom remembered reading about SPCA of Texas’s medical assistance program. She was able to speak that same day with the Pet Resource Center team, and they were able to find a solution to help Gnocchi out.
Once Gnocchi was able to get to a vet who specialized in rabbits, he was able to receive some medicine, ointment for his skin infections, as well as some wipes to help his skin and eyes.
Gnocchi’s mom writes, “Thank you so very much for offering a program like this to those in need. I couldn’t bear to think of the pain Gnocchi was in and know that we couldn’t afford to take care of him. I can’t imagine giving our bunny away, as people don’t realize how much work they are, and they often times get let loose in the yard (which is fatal for them), and the bunny rescues stay very full and often times can’t take any more rabbits. I wish we could send a thank you to each donor who helped make this possible, and they could see the impact they made on the animals and their families! I’m including a picture of little Gnocchi, so you can see him and know how much we love this little bundle of joy.”
All the doggone news? Cute cat pictures? Ways you can get involved? You bet.
