SPCA of Texas’ April Volunteer of the Month Melissa McAndrews began her work with the organization in October of 2022. When asked why she chose to give her time to the SPCA of Texas, she quickly responded, “The SPCA offers so many great services for the public, such as help to feed pets, vet care, and they partner with companies and organizations that ‘fill’ the gaps, when necessary.”
But more than that, Melissa’s love of animals shines through each time she comes to volunteer. “Melissa is the only volunteer I’ve seen consistently come and volunteer since I’ve started,” wrote one nominator. “She always shows compassion for the animals we have in [the shelter] and actually takes the time to get to know them. She shows understanding for the ones that may need a second and is always willing to help when needed.”
One of Melissa’s fondest experiences is with a dog that was surrendered to the shelter. “She was very unsure of her new surroundings,” Melissa noted. “She was not interested in being petted or interacting with me the first day that I took her outside.
“Two days later she was ready for belly rubs! It really shows how the staff cares and nurtures the dogs to feel comfortable and safe,” Melissa smiled.
Melissa has a special connection with King, who is a lot of fun. “He is a smart, active dog,” she said. “He knows sit, lay down, leave it, and loves to play fetch with any item.
“King is a big boy, but he wants to please whoever is with him,” Melissa said.
Melissa’s love of volunteering with the SPCA of Texas is exemplified in her demeanor and actions. “[She is] happy to help with anything and everything,” wrote another of her nominators. “[Melissa] comes every time [she’s] scheduled and stays late if she is needed. She is the BEST”
“Melissa is always willing to help out wherever she’s needed,” another nominator wrote. “She always has a smile on her face.”
“I love volunteering with the SPCA of Texas,” Melissa smiled. “Besides feeling great about helping the animals, SPCA really includes the volunteers in many aspects of the shelter functions and listens to your suggestions.”
Melissa is eager for others to know that there are many ways to volunteer with SPCA of Texas—not only positions where you can interact with animals. “There are tasks you can help with that do not include animal interactions at the shelter as well,” she said. “And there are even remote positions (these are great if your life does not allow you to be at the shelter when they are open, but you’d still like to be a part of the SPCA),” she said.
Melissa is extremely proud of the work she does at SPCA of Texas. “I have witnessed scared dogs become comfortable with the people around them. And, hopefully, I help take some of the daily tasks off the staff’s hands so they can do other things to help these dogs find safe, loving homes.”
