Compassion in Action – Volunteer of the Month – October 2022

Stephanie Rowan is the SPCA of Texas Volunteer of the Month for October. In addition to having a heart of gold about the size of Texas and a “let’s do this!” attitude, she generously donates a significant amount of her time to the SPCA of Texas. Her dedication to animals has spanned many years, and we’re beyond grateful that she gives so freely of her time to the animals and people right here. 

She is a regular fixture throughout both the SPCA of Texas’ Dallas Animal Care Center and the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center. And if you pay attention to dogs being taken out to play yards for exercise, you’ve certainly noticed her smile sailing by over her orange apron. 

“Anyone that knows me, knows I am a crazy animal lover,” Rowan explains. “I have been volunteering with animal rescues for over 17 years. You don’t do something that long unless you truly love it. To give time to help an animal is life changing. It doesn’t matter what is going on in my personal or work life. Once I get to the SPCA of Texas and get that one-on-one time with a dog, my world becomes peaceful and happy.” 

Rowan came to the SPCA of Texas after relocating to Uptown Dallas. At the time she was still volunteering with other rescue groups and was looking for a local shelter to apply herself at. She was introduced to the organization through the Young Professionals group and after touring the facilities and meeting some of the staff and other volunteers she knew she’d found a match. 

She highly recommends service to others, pointing to a myriad of needs that can be met. 

“There are so many ways you can volunteer,” Rowan says. “It’s not just walking dogs and picking up poop! Yes, you get to do that if you choose, but there are so many other ways to get involved. You can help behind the scenes, in adoption counseling, animal TLC, administration, mobile events, fostering, special events, group experiences, and so much more! No matter what skills you have, they can be used to help the animals.”
