Some volunteers show up. Sabra Scott shows up—every mobile event, every shelter shift, every time an animal needs a champion in their corner. That’s why we are thrilled to celebrate Sabra as the SPCA of Texas February Volunteer of the Month.
Sabra’s love for animals isn’t something she discovered recently. She grew up on a farm, spent her life surrounded by animals, and even has firsthand experience delivering them. That deep, lifelong connection to animal welfare led her to the SPCA of Texas four years ago, and she’s never looked back. “I used to work for Hill’s Pet Food, and that’s what inspired me to volunteer at the SPCA,” she shares. “I have been volunteering now for four years.”
In those four years, Sabra has become nothing short of a cornerstone of our volunteer community. She has worked at mobile adoption events, completed adoptions training, and even welcomed her own sweet girl, Murphy, into her home through the SPCA of Texas. Staff members and fellow volunteers describe her as genuine, warm, and truly extraordinary.
“Sabra is THE BEST! Mobiles wouldn’t run smoothly without her,” says one nominator. “She is the sweetest and most genuine volunteer I’ve gotten to work with both at mobiles and in-shelter.” Another staff member echoes that sentiment: “She’s always willing to jump in and help and really cares about the animals. And I’ve honestly never seen her in a bad mood!”
One nominator, who has had the privilege of growing alongside Sabra during her time here, puts it simply, “Sabra is such a light here.”
When asked what she hopes people understand about volunteering, Sabra’s answer speaks to the heart of why this work matters. “It is a very rewarding, positive experience to give back and pay it forward,” she says. “Learn to be kind to animals and treat them like a friend versus an object, and you will receive unconditional love.”
One of Sabra’s most cherished memories captures exactly what that unconditional love looks like in action. In March 2022, she had been walking a dog named Rocket every single day. He had been at the shelter for months. Then one day, his family walked through the door. “His new people came in to adopt him and took him to his loving home,” she recalls. “It was very memorable and the entire organization came out to say goodbye to him.” If you need a reminder of why this work is worth every minute, that’s it.
This month, Sabra is shining a spotlight on an incredibly special dog who is hoping for his own happy ending, Tate. At two and a half years old, Tate is calm, loving, and ready to be someone’s best friend. He’s great with children, gets along well with other dogs, is fully potty trained, and can even be left out of his crate without any issues. As Sabra describes him, “Tate’s a chill little boy. If you’re looking for a calm dog, he’s a love bug.”
Sabra, thank you for four incredible years of showing up, caring deeply, and reminding all of us what it looks like to truly make a difference. We are so lucky to have you.
