Hershey is a gorgeous chocolate lab and pitbull mix who is bursting at the seams with personality. He recently went on a Borrow a Buddy excursion with Foster Hero Jennifer. Both Hershey and Jennifer kept us updated during their long weekend together – here’s what they got up to!
Hershey
“I’m loving this home thing! Last night I got to meet my foster mom’s dog, Cairo, and her friends Hendrex and Guidry. Guidry was a small dog and I was fascinated by him. Hendrex was like a dark chocolate version of me. We ran around the backyard and played. It was fun!
Then we went to Foster Mom’s house. I explored the backyard and we just laid around until bedtime. I wasn’t comfortable going outside by myself so Foster Mom had to go with me, but she was fine with that. I got to sleep in the bed with FM…it was very comfortable!
This morning, we went for a walk and I got to pee on a whole bunch of new plants. Everyone has to know I was in the neighborhood! This afternoon, Cairo and her friend Hendrex are going to come over and we are going to play in the big backyard.
FM and her dad (one of my favorite SPCA of Texas volunteers, because he ALWAYS walks me) says the Hershey I am at home is not the Hershey I am in the shelter. I’m much calmer and not mouthy.
I’m pretty worn out from my walk – I need more exercise!
P.S. I don’t like FM’s cats. They look like these small furry things that hiss and yowl at me. But FM has a room just for her cats so they leave me alone and chill in their room (kinda like a moody teenager).”

“Hershey is crate trained!!! Who knew??? He has been eating in his crate and has been in the crate every day for a few hours and there have been no problems. It takes a little coaxing to get him in his crate, but once he does there are no problems.
And Hersh is house-trained! Not one accident in the house. He has been great with going to the backdoor when he needs to potty.
Hershey is a total attention hound! He wants to be pet or lay by someone in the house all the time. It is soooo cute, especially when he lets you pet his chest! The face he makes when you pet his chest is adorable!
Hershey has never met a stranger! He loves everyone. Every single person he ran across he wanted them to pet him, even kids.
Hershey isn’t much of a jumper…he can’t jump in my little SUV or onto my bed. He doesn’t jump onto the couch, instead he climbs. So to get him into the car I have to lift him.
Hershey loves to “talk” to other big dogs when he sees them. But the little dogs, he is fascinated by them. He either stares at them or completely ignores them. It is interesting.
After their weekend excursion, Jennifer decided to become Hershey’s Adoption Ambassador, pledging to personally help him find his forever home. Well, while Hershey was back at the shelter for a few days to check in with the veterinarians after donating blood to an anemic puppy, he found his forever home!
Lately, it seems like every long-term resident that goes out for a Borrow-a-Buddy weekend gets adopted shortly after they return. We’re starting to call this the Borrow-a-Buddy effect! We’re not sure why this happens, but we certainly aren’t complaining! We couldn’t be more thankful to our fosters for giving our dogs that extra bit of confidence, luck, or whatever it is that is putting them on the fast track to adoption!
