Every month, the SPCA of Texas has the privilege of recognizing one of the many incredible volunteers who help bring hope, healing, and joy to animals and people alike. This December, we are thrilled to honor someone whose kindness, dedication, and radiant positivity have made a lasting impact on our organization for years: Keith Boyd.
Keith joined the SPCA of Texas volunteer family in May of 2017, and from that very first day, he has been a light—steady, warm, and always ready to brighten the day for both animals and humans. Whether he’s guiding shy pups into the spotlight for the WFAA Tailwaggers segment, supporting our LGBTQ Advisory Council, lending expertise during volunteer group events, or stepping in anywhere help is needed, Keith shows up with kindness, professionalism, and one of the best smiles we know.
Ask anyone on staff, and they’ll tell you: Keith is the kind of volunteer who makes everything better, a real source of joy.
One team member shared, “Keith is always more than willing to step in and assist with a smile! He has an absolute way with dogs that few others have. Keith takes deviations from plans extremely well and always makes sure the people and furry friends around him are as happy as possible.”
Another employee noted his incredible consistency and unwavering reliability, writing, “He is always smiling. He is always kind. He is polished and professional and reliable. Even when worried about his dad in Florida during Hurricane Milton—Keith showed up for us. Super guy.”
Day after day, year after year, Keith has been a steady presence. “He is here consistently every week and helps to take our pups to the news! He is always ready to help and step in at a moment’s notice. Keith is great!” one staff member added.
When asked about his time with the SPCA of Texas, Keith’s answers reflect the humility and warmth that define him.
His favorite memory? “That’s easy… seven years ago when I brought our Lollipop home on the Borrow-a-Buddy program and she never went back. She was a playgroup favorite and has been a loving part of our family ever since, he smiled.”
When he met our featured pet, Jimbo—a wise, gentle, 4-year-old leaner with a heart of gold—Keith’s response was immediate and sincere: “If I didn’t already have three dogs, I would take this one in an instant….My Christmas wish is that he finds his home for the holidays.” Keith’s wish came true–Jimbo recently was adopted into a loving family!
For Keith, volunteering brings deep personal meaning. It makes him feel “humble, grateful, and useful.” His love for animals and some free time were the spark that brought him through our doors, but what keeps him here is the belief that everyone benefits from volunteering, no matter where or how often they do it.
Keith wishes more people knew just how accessible and flexible volunteering at the SPCA of Texas can be: “It’s really easy, Keith said. “You can do as much or as little as you want. You can read to animals, walk dogs, or play with kittens.” His advice is simple: “Just start by visiting spca.org.”
One of his favorite roles is serving as an animal handler during the weekly Tailwaggers segment each Tuesday morning on WFAA Channel 8. It’s there he witnesses the magic of animal connection firsthand. After each segment, he and the featured dog visit the sales department, where staff affectionately call it “Therapy Tuesday.” “When everyone pauses their busy day to shower a dog with affection,” Keith said, “That’s the power of a dog.”
From bringing comfort to a nervous pup to lifting the spirits of an entire office, Keith embodies what it means to lead with kindness and compassion. His dedication enriches the lives of animals, staff, and the community at large.
We’re grateful to celebrate Keith Boyd as our December Volunteer of the Month, though in truth, he’s been a gift to us for far longer.
