DALLAS — The SPCA of Texas announces the launch of a $31 million capital campaign, Care Unleashed, to fund a major campus expansion and facility reimagining at a Cornerstone Unveiling event taking place Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. at 2400 Lone Star Drive in Dallas. Brief remarks will begin at 10:30 a.m. The expansion will provide more space, advanced veterinary medical resources, and enhanced adoption experiences to meet the growing needs of animals and people in North Texas.
The cornerstone unveiling marks the celebration of several transformational gifts. An $8 million gift from The Stephens Greth Foundation includes $5 million for a new building and $3 million to accelerate programs. The reimagined campus will be named The Stephens Greth Foundation Campus and includes three vital buildings: the Dallas Animal Care Center, the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center and the new building.
In addition, a $5 million gift from The Addy Foundation will help build the newest facility, The Addy Foundation Care and Recovery Center. Other lead gifts include a $1 million gift from The Eugene McDermott Foundation and a $500,000 gift from Steven and Sue Koons for the Steven and Sue Koons Surgery Center. The SPCA of Texas is grateful for the support of the following donors to Care Unleashed: Communities Foundation of Texas; Embrey Family Foundation; Hoblitzelle Foundation; The Meadows Foundation; and Theodore and Beulah Beasley Foundation.
“This campaign represents a historic investment in the future of animal welfare and the overall health of our communities in North Texas,” said SPCA of Texas President & CEO, Chris Luna, JD. “Between 2025 and our organization’s 90th anniversary in 2028, this expansion is projected to double our annual reach from approximately 50,000 to nearly 100,000, serving more than 350,000 animals and families over that period.
“Every dollar raised through Care Unleashed will help the SPCA of Texas create an expansion where animals not only survive, but thrive,” Luna added. “This will increase our ability to care for pets rescued from cruelty investigations, which often are high-volume cases, in a place separate from our adoptable animals. We also will have more room to accommodate vulnerable pets who need help after natural disasters while connecting more families with loving companions.”
With the addition of this new building, the SPCA of Texas will significantly increase the organization’s capacity to serve the growing needs of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Specifically, the expanded campus will double the organization’s capacity to care and will:
More than 80 percent of the campaign, Care Unleashed, has been raised. The SPCA of Texas has secured 100 percent participation in financial support for Care Unleashed from the organization’s Board of Directors.
“The SPCA of Texas always steps in when animals and families need help,” said SPCA of Texas Board Chair Whitney Eichinger. “As North Texas has grown, so have community needs. Our shelters are crowded, and families are facing tough choices. Right now, compassion matters more than anything.
“That is why we are expanding, to create more spaces where fragile animals can rest and heal. We are creating a welcoming place where families can meet their next furry family member, and we are also giving our teams the tools to prevent cruelty, to respond when disaster strikes and to give every pet a chance at a healthy, happy life.”
The SPCA of Texas recognizes the leadership and commitment of the Care Unleashed Steering Committee: Jennifer Altabef, Jodi Benefiel, Katy Bock, Pam Busbee, Lauren Embrey, Jonathan Kelly, Sue and Steve Koons, and Charles Lipscomb, as well as the President’s Council: Diane Brierley, Kristin Hallam, Mary Spencer, and Karen Urie.
This is a historic day for the SPCA of Texas. The cornerstone unveiling honors nearly 90 years of service while looking ahead to the future. The SPCA of Texas’ new mission statement—creating a brighter future for animals, people, and the community—guides the organization’s strategic direction and priorities. The expansion brings that promise to life. With it, more animals will heal, more families will stay together, and more adoptions will bring joy to homes across North Texas.
