At the SPCA of Texas, volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission, and every so often, a group comes along that leaves an especially lasting paw print. This January, we are proud to recognize the dedicated Notre Dame School students, led by is Brian Hahn, as our Volunteer Group of the Month, honoring not just their hard work, but a partnership rooted in compassion, consistency, and service that has flourished for more than a decade.
Since 2014, the SPCA of Texas and Notre Dame School have shared a remarkable partnership built on a shared belief: that service changes lives, both human and animal. Year after year, Notre Dame School students arrive ready to roll up their sleeves, jump in wherever help is needed, and give their time with intention and heart. Their visits are filled with energy, teamwork, and an eagerness to make a difference, and our animals feel it every step of the way.
During their volunteer shifts, these students take on a wide range of essential tasks that keep our shelter running smoothly. From preparing enrichment items that keep our cats and dogs mentally stimulated, to helping with daily shelter operations like cleaning cat condos, folding laundry, and walking dogs, their contributions support both animal wellbeing and staff capacity. They understand that every task—big or small—matters.
One project that truly stood out this January was their dedication to reading to our dogs. This special initiative has become a meaningful focus for the group, and it’s easy to see why. Sitting quietly with a shelter dog, offering calm voices and gentle presence, helps reduce stress and builds confidence—especially for shy or anxious pups. It’s a simple act with a powerful impact, and the students embrace it wholeheartedly.
When asked how volunteering makes them feel, students Alec Barry, Dallan Thomas, Brayden Zipper, and Roberto Barragan shared that it gives them “a bigger sense of purpose” and feels deeply fulfilling to be part of a team dedicated to improving the lives of their “paw-some friends.” That sense of purpose shines through in everything they do. Whether they’re completing behind-the-scenes tasks or spending one-on-one time with animals, the students’ care and commitment are unmistakable.
Their inspiration to volunteer stems directly from Notre Dame School’s mission to equip students with meaningful, hands-on experiences. The SPCA of Texas provides the perfect environment for that growth—one where students can develop responsibility, empathy, and teamwork while seeing the tangible results of their service. As they noted, one of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing animals come into the shelter in need, receive care and rehabilitation, and ultimately experience the joy of finding a loving family.
The students also emphasized something they wish more people knew about volunteering with the SPCA of Texas: there truly is something for everyone.
Whether you’re passionate about hands-on animal care, behind-the-scenes support, or creative projects, there’s a role that fits your interests and strengths. Their own favorite “reward” at the end of a shift? Taking dogs out to the play fields—an opportunity to bond, play, and see tails wag freely while building compassion and accountability through service.
One standout memory they shared was designing the Tree of Gratitude during the Thanksgiving season. Watching fellow volunteers fill the tree with leaves of thankful notes became a powerful reminder of the community that surrounds and supports our mission. Moments like these reflect the ripple effect of volunteerism—how one act of service inspires many others.
Participating in their group photo is special guest Pico, who since has been adopted. Knowing that a once-shelter pet is now thriving in a loving home perfectly captures the impact of the students’ work and the hope they help create.
The Notre Dame School students embody the very spirit of volunteerism we strive to foster—showing up with open hearts, positive attitudes, and a willingness to help wherever needed. Their long-standing commitment has made our shelter brighter, our animals happier, and our community stronger.
To Alec, Dallan, Brayden, Roberto, Brian, and the entire Notre Dame School community: thank you for being such an incredible force for good. We are deeply grateful for your continued partnership, and are honored to celebrate you as our January Volunteer Group of the Month.
