This February, we are thrilled to honor a very special group of volunteers—Tamra Dohman and her dedicated students from Notre Dame School. During every weekly visit, these young people put their enthusiasm, kindness and unwavering commitment to work helping our animals in need.
Dohman, a devoted teacher at Notre Dame School, has been bringing a new group of students to volunteer with the SPCA of Texas every year since 2017. For more than seven years, her students have lent their time and energy to making our shelter a better place.
This year’s group—Ruth Michaely, Jesus Renteria, Joshua Glover, and Angel Almaraz—began their volunteer journey with us in August 2024. Since then, they have been an integral part of our behind-the-scenes operations, ensuring that our animals are cared for and comfortable.
While their contributions may not always be in the spotlight, these students are vital to the well-being of our shelter pets. From folding laundry and washing dishes to keeping cat kennels clean and cozy, the Notre Dame students perform tasks that create a healthier, happier environment for every animal in our care. Their dedication helps ensure that every pet has a clean and welcoming space while they wait for their loving homes.
When asked about their experiences volunteering with the SPCA of Texas, the students shared that they love interacting with the dogs, and enjoy knowing that their hard work makes a difference. The students’ responses highlight their deep compassion for animals:
The work done by Tamra and her students extends beyond their weekly shifts. Their kindness and dedication inspire other volunteers and demonstrate how even the smallest tasks can have a significant impact. Whether it’s ensuring a clean dish for a dog’s next meal or providing a fresh blanket for a cat to curl up in, their contributions create a space where animals feel safe and loved.
We are beyond grateful for the unwavering support of Tamra Dohman and the students of Notre Dame School. Their commitment to the well-being of our shelter pets reflects the true spirit of volunteerism.
To Tamra, Ruth, Jesus, Joshua, and Angel—thank you for your compassion, your dedication, and your willingness to make a difference in the lives of animals in need. The SPCA of Texas is lucky to have you as part of our volunteer family!
