From the minute she arrives at the SPCA of Texas Dallas Animal Care Center, December Volunteer of The Month Vesna Swift is off and running.
“Vesna is awesome! She has been a wonderful asset to the foster team on Saturdays. Vesna comes in and gets busy stocking and whatever else we need,” wrote one nominator. “When she goes to the back for supplies, she stops and puts a load of laundry in the washer and does dishes as well! Then Vesna grabs what we need restocked and heads back to our office and restocks. Then she will head back to laundry to start another load. There are times she may stop and get a photo of a cat in the rotunda to update the cat’s online profile, too. She’s a whirlwind getting things done. We love her!!”
Vesna especially likes volunteering at the SPCA of Texas because she can bring her daughter to volunteer with her. “I decided to volunteer for the SPCA because there are so many volunteer opportunities for myself and my daughter,” she said.
“Vesna and her daughter are always around to help out and lend a hand,” noted one of her nominators. “You can find her all over the shelter answering other volunteers’ questions and helping whoever needs it. She also supports the SPCA by fostering when her family can! Vesna is so kind and helpful!”
“Vesna has helped with many facets of our organization,” wrote another nominator. “She is always willing to help behind the scenes when needed, including on Thanksgiving evening when she reorganized the laundry room. Vesna is always eager to lend a hand and assist any new team members who need guidance. Vesna’s hard work ethic and her compassion for both animals and people embody our mission and values.”
“I would like people to know that there are so many volunteer opportunities besides walking dogs and spending time with the cats,” Vesna said. “The never ending laundry, dishes, restocking of supplies and helping at special events is always needed. The hours are so flexible and can fit anyone’s schedule. Plus, the other volunteers and staff become your ‘friends’.”
SPCA of Texas shelter pets become Vesna’s friends, too. One special Kitty is Dionne, “a beautiful girl who loves to be petted and hang around people,” smiled Vesna. “She is at the SPCA of Texas with her sister, Tai, who is very shy.”
Another pet, KJ, is a gentle pup close to Vesna’s heart. “KJ is a sweet girl who loves people and other dogs,” Vesna said. “She is a medium size cutie who is always ready to go for a walk, and play. KJ is also very gentle, enjoys quiet time with people, and she is hoping to find a family she can call her own.”
All the tasks that Vesna does are essential to the success of the SPCA of Texas, from helping to socialize our shelter pets to make them more adoptable or lessening the loads of our staff members so they can perform their jobs more effectively.
“I feel that I am making a difference every time I step foot into the facility,” Vesna smiled. “Being able to give extra pets to the cats and being able to spend time in the pods with the dogs while seeing their thankful eyes for any extra attention they receive is priceless.”
Vesna is especially proud of the community impact work being done by the SPCA of Texas.
“My favorite volunteer memory is seeing the number of families lining up for the free vaccine clinic,” Vesna said. “It showed what an impact the SPCA of Texas makes for the wellbeing of animals in the community.
“I talk to my friends about my volunteer work, and the community impact the SPCA of Texas is involved in. My friend did not know and was able to get extra free food to help feed her cats she took in,” Vesna smiled.
