What to Look for in a Great Boarding Facility

With the holidays approaching, you’re probably already making arrangements if you’re heading out of town. One task that can be stressful, especially for new pet owners, is finding a quality boarding facility. Make a point to ask trusted friends and family for recommendations to start, but be sure to do your own research. If you want to make sure that your precious pet is comfortable and well taken care of in your absence, make sure the boarding facility you choose meets the following criteria.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s incredibly important that your boarding facility has a staff that loves animals. You’ll be able to tell from the moment you walk in with your furry friend how they feel about animals. Don’t be surprised if their shirt or apron is covered in pet hair!

Ask for a tour! Is the space big enough for your pet? Are the kennels clean and water bowls full? Where do the pets sleep at night? What time does the staff close up at night and return in the morning? Don’t be afraid to be nosy about the accommodations – this is your fur baby we’re talking about!

If you’re boarding your cat, they will be housed separately the entire time, but dogs will often get to socialize with other dogs during the day. Ask about how long the dogs get to play and what happens if two dogs don’t get along. Many boarding facilities separate their dogs by size, age group and play level to ensure all the pups are comfortable and get along.

4. Transparency and Communication

Is the staff willing to send you regular updates about your pet while you are away? Are they active on social media, posting photos of smiling pups and playful cats all day long? Did they ask about your pet’s medications and dietary concerns? A transparent, communicative boarding facility will happily answer all of your questions and concerns.

A great pet boarding facility will be a place your pet will actually enjoy while you are away. Yes, they will miss you, but with affection from the staff, play time with other pets and a few comforts from home, they will be just fine. The true test comes when, after a few visits, your pet jumps out of your arms and happily trots off to play with their buddies. That’s when you know your pet is in the best possible place while you are away.
