At the SPCA of Texas, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our mission. And this May, we are thrilled to honor Nashla Kalifa as our Volunteer of the Month. Since March 2023, Nashla has been a beacon of dedication, compassion, and positivity, and her impact over the last two years has been nothing short of extraordinary.
From her very first shift, Nashla dove in with her whole heart. Her passion for animal welfare is evident in everything she does, from walking dogs and comforting cats to leading mobile adoption events and supporting high-profile fundraisers like Fur Ball and Strut Your Mutt. Nashla quickly became known not just for her reliability, but also for the warmth and optimism she brings to every interaction.
As staff members shared, “Nashla is always there to help with a smile and a great attitude to help the pets,” and “She’s an exceptional volunteer who truly embodies the mission and values of the SPCA of Texas.” Nashla has even stepped up to independently run mobile adoption events, directly helping more pets find their forever homes while expanding our reach in the community.
One of Nashla’s proudest moments came when she led her very first mobile adoption event. “It turned out to be such a rewarding day. We got two puppies adopted!” she shared. “I love mobile events because they give me the chance to help people find the perfect pet or introduce them to the amazing work the SPCA of Texas is doing.”
Nashla also has a special connection with Crouton, her featured friend this month. “Crouton is such a special girl,” she says. “I have a soft spot for senior pets and animals who end up back at the shelter through no fault of their own—and Crouton is both. She’s the happiest pup, always ready to share love and cuddles. Plus, who can resist that underbite!?”*
Beyond her tangible contributions, Nashla’s spirit is what truly stands out. “Volunteering fills me with purpose and joy,” she says. “Every moment reminds me why I started. And no matter how tired I feel, I always leave happy.”
Nashla’s journey into volunteering began with a deep-rooted passion for animal welfare. After 14 years of fostering and rescue work, she wanted a more hands-on experience at a shelter—and found exactly that at the SPCA of Texas. “From my first shift, I knew I had found a community that shares my values and love for animals.”
When asked what she wants people to know about volunteering, Nashla is quick to point out the variety and flexibility. “You can give a little time or a lot. Whether it’s walking dogs, cuddling cats, supporting events, or helping with pet pantries or admin work, there’s something for everyone.”
We are incredibly grateful to have Nashla as part of our SPCA of Texas family. Her heart, her hustle, and her unwavering dedication make her a true champion for the animals—and an inspiration to us all.
*The SPCA of Texas is happy to report that sweet Crouton was adopted into a loving home on May 20th!
