At the SPCA of Texas, our promise is simple: to provide animals with the kind of care we would want for our own furry friends. Thanks to you, this year, that promise shows up in the details you can feel when you walk through our doors, from calmer kennels to kinder routines to a team that is working in lockstep for the good of each animal.
Here’s how your support is helping us raise the bar for animals in our care in 2025 and beyond:
Stronger Teams, Stronger Outcomes
We’ve built a leadership model that connects our medical, shelter, lifesaving, and technical teams, ensuring a smoother journey for every animal. New roles, such as Directors of Shelter, Medical, and Technical Operations, and a Senior Director of Lifesaving Operations, are breaking down silos and ensuring that decisions always prioritize what’s best for the animals.
We’ve also made investments in our people. By aligning pay with market standards, we’ve achieved remarkable results. By early 2025, turnover had dropped to just 5.9%, the lowest for a single quarter in our history, while retention hit an impressive 94.6%.
Every Animal is Seen and Supported
Our cross-department teams walk the entire shelter together three times a week, asking three simple questions: Who are you? Where are you going? What do you need? This approach is already leading to faster adoptions and smoother transitions from intake to foster to adoption.
Thanks to our behavior program, pets who need extra support are receiving personalized care. Since expanding this program, we’ve reduced the average length of stay for dogs by 23% and for cats by 4%, ensuring more animals find their loving homes faster.
A Calmer Day, On Purpose
Here is what a typical day now looks like for a dog in our care. Morning starts with a walk, a deep-cleaned kennel, fresh water, and enrichment that uses scent to lower stress. As health allows, dogs join at least one, and sometimes two, play groups each day utilizing the Dogs Playing for Life methodology, which better reflects real-life behavior than a leash walk alone. At 11 a.m., we dim the lights to help everyone reset before visitors arrive. Later in the day, dogs enjoy walks, one-on-one time, or food puzzles, then receive a treat or toy before our second kennel cleaning. The shelter quiets at 6 p.m. so dogs settle into a clean, calm space for the night.
We also removed unintentional barriers to adoption. Color-coded kennel cards quickly signal handling needs, and medical icons invite simple conversations instead of warnings. Kennel cards now highlight positive traits and fun facts to spark connection.
Teddy’s Story: A Remarkable Turnaround
Teddy came to us as a frightened stray with severe matting, fleas, ticks, and painful wounds. On Day 1, he received vaccines, a microchip, wound care, pain relief, and anxiety support. With the dedicated care of our medical, behavior, and animal care teams, Teddy made incredible progress. By Day 22, he was ready for adoption, and the very next day, he went home with a loving family. Teddy’s transformation is proof of the difference we can make when we work together, driven by compassion and care for each animal.
Better Spaces, Better Outcomes
We’ve made significant improvements at our Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, including reorienting kennels to reduce stress, increasing spacing between them, and adding reinforced panels to lower noise and prevent disease transmission. We’ve also streamlined adoption meet-and-greets and improved communication tools for staff and volunteers, ensuring better outcomes for the animals in our care.
And there’s more to come!
