This week we want to give you a closer look at Fuseli, courtesy of our friends at ReadingGlasses.com! Clearly, this long-term resident hasn’t found their forever home yet because the right person just hasn’t laid eyes on them yet!

You probably wouldn’t think it the first time you met him, but Fuseli is a staff and volunteer favorite! Wait – this cat that’s glaring at me and shying back to the corner of his kennel is the most popular cat at the SPCA of Texas? Yes! Let us explain. Fuseli first came to us back in 2018 as a transfer in from the ASPCA. He was soon adopted, but after a year of trying, his owner had to return him due to his extreme dislike of the other animals in the home. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, things just don’t work out with an adopted pet. That’s why every animal at the SPCA of Texas always has a home with us. If you ever adopt a pet from us and for whatever reason, it doesn’t work out, we will always take them back and help them find a new forever home.
Upon returning to the SPCA of Texas, Fuseli was distrusting and standoffish. Understandably, he was stressed to be back at the shelter, with so many smells of other animals and no king sized bed for him to snuggle on. But our Behavior Team never backs down from a challenge. It took lots of patience, as well as trial and error, but we figured out the trick to Fuseli’s heart – toothbrushes! Fuseli absolutely, positively goes wild for a good brushing. His ears perk up and his eyes go soft when he sees someone coming towards him slowly with a brush. Toothbrushes are his favorite, and he loves when volunteer and staff brush him on the cheek or on his forehead. Once you earn enough of his trust, Fuseli will even start playing with wand toys!
While Fuseli isn’t a cat that will immediately jump into your arms and be your best friend, he’s the sort of animal whose trust and love for you will build over time as you get to know each other. We know that whoever Fuseli chooses as his human, will find the growth of the relationship so rewarding. To adopt Fuseli, please head to spca.org/adopt to make an adoption appointment.
