At the SPCA of Texas, it’s the people behind the scenes—those who show up, give their time, and care deeply—who keep our mission thriving. This April, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on one of those special individuals, George Haynes, our Volunteer of the Month!
George began his volunteer journey with us in January 2022, and from day one, he has been an absolute force of support. Whether he’s lending a hand with PetSmart adoption folders, helping the Development team with data entry and administrative tasks, or preparing for staff events and engagement activities, George is always ready and willing to assist. He brings not only his time but also his heart, wisdom, and an infectious spirit that uplifts everyone around him.
Ask anyone who’s worked with George, and you’ll hear the same sentiment echoed again and again, “He is invaluable.”
“George is here and ready to help in any way every Thursday at 2 p.m. on the dot,” one nominator wrote. “He brings joy to our whole department and always finds more efficient ways of doing things. Development cannot thank George enough!”
“He’s a rockstar,” another shared. “Always in a great mood, ready to jump in wherever needed, and tackling tasks that make a huge difference for our team, our donors, and the organization.”
“He’s the nicest man and so pleasant to have around—like they all are!”
The consistent feedback from our team says it all. “George is a steady hand, a thoughtful presence, and a huge help to everyone he encounters. Whether he’s addressing donor letters or helping Development keep important stewardship projects on track, George brings his A-game every time. And he does it all with a smile, warmth, and a true desire to serve.”
For George, volunteering at the SPCA of Texas is more than just a weekly commitment—it’s a meaningful connection to animals, people, and purpose. When asked about his favorite memory, he didn’t hesitate: “My first memory is the dogs. So many looking for a new home! I wanted all of them.”
That love for animals led George to the SPCA years ago when he and his family adopted Scout, a sweet 15-pound shepherd/miniature whippet mix. Scout brought joy and love into their home, and after losing him this past March, George found solace in giving back to the place that gave them so much.
“I was drawn to the SPCA nearly 15 years ago when we adopted Scout,” he said. “We’re not ready to fill the void quite yet, but when we are, the first place we’ll go is the SPCA of Texas.”
It’s clear that George’s dedication runs deep—not just to the tasks he completes, but to the mission of the SPCA of Texas. He’s inspired by the staff’s passion and commitment to the animals, and he notes the difference that leadership has made across the organization.
“The energy at the SPCA of Texas starts with Chris Luna, President and CEO,” George said. “There’s a trickledown effect that can be felt throughout. Since he joined the organization, it is more organized and more professional. If, as a two-hour-a-week volunteer, I see the changes, I can only imagine how upbeat the staff must feel.”
For George, volunteering is an emotional high—a way to give back, stay connected, and bring a little joy to the lives of others. “If I can make life a little easier for the staff and a lot happier for the animals, my day is a success,” he said.
George’s message to others considering volunteering? Simple and powerful.
“The SPCA of Texas is a happy place. The staff’s mission is the welfare of the dogs and cats. The energy is electric. I always feel great when I leave.”
George’s commitment, positivity, and willingness to jump in wherever needed are just a few reasons we’re honored to name him April Volunteer of the Month. He embodies the spirit of service and compassion that fuels everything we do.
Thank you, George, for your generosity, your time, and your heart. You make a difference every single week.
