DALLAS; WAXAHACHIE, TEXAS — The SPCA of Texas Ellis County Animal Care Center (ECACC) will close its animal shelter operations effective Tuesday, April 15, 2025. This decision was announced on Jan. 15, and followed evaluation and discussions with Ellis County leadership to better align with the organization’s mission and to advance animal welfare across North Texas. The SPCA of Texas’ work in Ellis County will continue.
The SPCA of Texas remains committed to the Ellis County community and will continue to provide affordable or free vaccine clinics to support pet and community wellness, offer mobile adoptions events to connect pets with loving families, assist in animal cruelty investigations in collaboration with local authorities, and transfer animals to its Dallas facilities when capacity and staffing permit.
“Ensuring the welfare of animals and assisting their caretakers remains our focus,” said SPCA of Texas President & CEO Chris Luna, J.D. “We are committed to the ongoing delivery of key services for pets and their owners in Ellis County.
“We are looking forward to hosting a free vaccine clinic at the Ellis County Youth Expo Center in Waxahachie, Saturday, May 31st from 8 a.m. to Noon,” Luna added. “This is just one of many more events to come as we work with area animal welfare organizations, including Pet Coalition of Ellis County, and County leaders to enhance animal and community health and safety throughout the region.”
That ongoing collaboration is key to the SPCA of Texas’ continued presence in Ellis County as the ECACC shelter closes. Residents still have access to a strong network of trusted resources for animal-related needs.
One such partner is the Pet Coalition of Ellis County, which advocates for companion animals by working with local animal welfare agencies and community volunteers to create a better future for animals in Ellis County.
“The Pet Coalition of Ellis County (PCEC) is grateful to the SPCA of Texas for its continued support of the pets, and their people of Ellis County,” said Shannon Smock, Board Member & Preventative/Medical Care Co-Chair, Pet Coalition of Ellis County.
“One of PCEC’s most important efforts is to help the residents of Ellis County keep their pets safe, healthy and in their own homes by providing pet food assistance, microchipping, spay and neuter surgeries, and low-cost immunizations as our resources permit. We thank the SPCA of Texas for the tremendous care they have provided to the homeless pets of Ellis County over the past five years, and we truly appreciate their continued support.”
The organization’s website includes resources for low-cost preventative care, pet food pantries, training tips and rehoming pets. It also features pets available for adoption or foster. For details, visit petcoalitionec.org.
Additional support remains available for animals and pet owners across the region. For animal control or to report suspected cruelty, contact the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office. For more information, visit elliscountysheriff.com.

“This is not a goodbye, it’s a new chapter,” Luna added. “We are here for the people and pets of Ellis County, and we’re excited to partner on innovative, compassionate solutions for the future.”
