Charlotte Ahlin wrote in Bustle magazine that Mark Twain adored his cat Bambino so much that when he got lost one day, Twain took out an ad in the New York American offering a reward for Bambino’s safe return. Twain described the cat as, “Large and intensely black; thick, velvety fur; has a faint fringe of white hair across his chest; not easy to find in ordinary light.”

One of Twain’s famous quotes demonstrates his love and respect for cats, “When a man loves cats, I am his friend and comrade, without further introduction.”

Kurt Vonnegut’s little dog Pumpkin was his almost constant companion. He once noted, “I cannot distinguish between the love I have for people and the love I have for dogs.”

Even Ernest Hemingway, one of America’s most macho appearing authors was obsessed with his cats, referring to them as “love sponges” and “purr factories.” And as Alter and Ackerberg noted in a New York Times article, he “even taught one of them to drink with him—milk with a splash of whisky.”

John Steinbeck paid homage to his poodle Charley in Travels with Charley, which is all about Charley and him going on a road trip together. However, he always gave his setter Toby special credit for helping make Of Mice and Men the successful novel it is because the dog ate the first draft.

Ahlin notes that Steinbeck commented, “My setter pup, left alone one night, made confetti of about half of my [manuscript] book. Two months’ work to do over again. It sets me back. There was no other draft. I was pretty mad, but the poor little fellow may have been acting critically.”
