In response to devastating floods across Texas’ Hill Country, the SPCA of Texas led a strategic rescue mission. On July 9, the SPCA of Texas welcomed 55 large-breed dogs from overwhelmed shelters in Kerr County, Williamson County, and neighboring regions. This critical intake effort, in collaboration with Wings of Rescue, the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), Austin Pets Alive!, and other animal welfare agencies, made room for critical emergency operations in the hardest hit areas.
To further support disaster relief efforts, the SPCA of Texas is sending supplies, coordinating logistics, and preparing for additional transports with the help of Wings of Rescue, Best Friends Animal Society, and BISSELL Pet Foundation. The magnitude of modern disaster relief requires strategy, infrastructure, and deep partnerships. These collaboration efforts are built on decades of trust and ensure that no single animal welfare agency bears the burden alone.
The SPCA of Texas’ Russell E. Dealey Rescue Center (DRC) was acquired in 2015 specifically to handle large-scale animal cruelty seizures and support natural disaster relief. DRC has again proven to be vital in the wake of crisis. Many animals arriving at DRC from affected areas are injured, disoriented, and deeply traumatized. Upon intake, dedicated veterinary and behavior teams immediately begin comprehensive evaluations and trauma-informed rehabilitation to restore health, build trust, and prepare these animals for loving homes.
This is only the beginning of their recovery journey, but the SPCA of Texas is standing ready for the next wave of need as we enter hurricane season. Learn more about how we supported the animals and people of Kerr County.
