August Volunteer of the Month Brings Patience, Purpose and Plenty of Love

There are some people who seem to carry a little extra sunshine wherever they go. At the SPCA of Texas, Mary Grace Horton is one of those people.

Whether she’s walking a dog, spending quiet time with a shy cat or cleaning a kennel, Mary Grace approaches every task with patience, kindness and a smile. Her warmth has made an impact not only on the animals she cares for, but also on the staff and fellow volunteers who are lucky enough to work alongside her.

That’s why we’re delighted to celebrate Mary Grace Horton as the SPCA of Texas’ August Volunteer of the Month!

For Mary Grace, volunteering is about connection. She says volunteering makes her feel calm, and connecting with all the different animals “fills my heart with so much love.” It’s a feeling that shines through in everything she does.

Mary Grace is currently a law student studying to become an animal rights and environmental law attorney. While looking for a way to make a direct, hands-on difference during her summer, she found her way to the SPCA of Texas.

“I wanted to spend my summer making the lives of animals a little brighter while also learning about the shelter operations,” Mary Grace explains.

And brighten lives she has.

One of the things Mary Grace appreciates most about volunteering is the peaceful atmosphere. She wishes more people knew just how welcoming and encouraging the experience can be.

“Going into shifts feels like entering your own little world with each of the animals,” she says.

That special connection is particularly meaningful when working with animals who need a little extra time and patience. Mary Grace has watched shy cats gradually gain her trust, an experience she describes as incredibly rewarding.

She’s also seen the difference a simple walk can make, watching dogs return inside looking calmer and more relaxed after some time outdoors.

Sometimes, those small moments are the biggest ones.

Mary Grace’s favorite memory is a perfect example. While walking dogs outside one day, she decided to see if she could convince each dog to sit with her on a bench. Each dog reacted differently to the invitation, and the ones who decided to jump up and join her seemed to have just as much fun with the experience as she did.

It was a simple, silly moment, but those are often the memories that stay with us.

There’s also one special cat who has captured Mary Grace’s heart: Fable, who recently was adopted to be a working cat. Fable required Mary Grace to practice heightened patience and compassion, and their relationship was built through a little trial and error. But every bit of effort was worth it.

“Experiencing his tender personality was SO worth the work,” she says.

That willingness to be patient, to keep trying and to see the individual animal underneath the uncertainty is exactly what makes volunteers like Mary Grace so valuable.

Her impact hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Mary Grace’s nominators describe her as dependable and hardworking, noting that she always has a smile on her face, even when she’s in the middle of cleaning a cat kennel. They say Mary Grace has made a difference not only to the volunteer team, but to the animal care team as well.

“We thank you, Mary Grace, for being such a ray of sunshine.”

And what a fitting description.

Volunteers are an essential part of the SPCA of Texas family. They give their time, energy and hearts to animals who may be frightened, uncertain or simply waiting for someone to notice them. Through walks, enrichment, cleaning, companionship and countless other acts of kindness, volunteers help shelter animals feel seen and cared for.

Mary Grace reminds us that making a difference doesn’t always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it’s sitting quietly beside a cat until he trusts you. Sometimes it’s taking a dog for a peaceful walk. Sometimes it’s inviting a pup onto a bench just to see what happens.

And sometimes, it’s simply showing up with a smile.
