Some donations help a pet. Some help a person. And some help an entire family stay together.
That’s true of the supplies it takes to care for thousands of animals each year at the SPCA of Texas, and it’s true of the pallets our friends at Amazon donate to help us do it.
Food and treats. Beds and blankets. Toys and enrichment. Crates, bowls, cleaning supplies, and all the everyday necessities that help keep animals healthy, comfortable, and cared for. But caring for pets also means caring for the people who love them. Sometimes, keeping a pet and their family together starts with a bag of dog food.
For the past several years, our friends at Amazon have helped the SPCA of Texas meet those needs in an extraordinary way.
Since 2022, Amazon has donated more than 650 pallets of supplies to the SPCA of Texas, with a total value of more than $1.2 million.
What arrives on those pallets can vary tremendously. For pets, there may be wet and dry food, treats, litter, toys, bowls, leashes, and harnesses. Sometimes there’s food and personal care items for the people who love them, too. And then there are things like blankets, towels, and sheets that can be put to good use by people, pets, and the SPCA of Texas alike.
It’s the same idea, pallet after pallet: creating a brighter future for animals, people, and the community.
When Amazon lets us know a donation is ready, members of the SPCA of Texas maintenance team pick up the pallets and bring them to our Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center. There, our Community Impact Manager, Tonja Thurman, leads the sorting. Longtime SPCA of Texas volunteer Jesus helps her go through each pallet and figure out where the items can do the most good.
And they go just about everywhere.
Amazon donations help care for animals in our shelters and support foster families, the Pet Resource Center, Animal Cruelty Investigations, volunteers, staff, and disaster response efforts. Even unexpected items can find a purpose, including especially tempting foods and treats that can encourage a frightened, stressed, or sick shelter pet who isn’t interested in eating their regular food.
The generosity reaches well beyond our walls, too. Organizations including Inspired Vision, Community Food Bank, The Stewpot, and other community partners across Dallas also receive supplies from Amazon, extending the reach to even more pets and people throughout our community.
One recent week, an Amazon pickup brought eight pallets of supplies to the SPCA of Texas. That same day, Inspired Vision picked up six pallets of dog food. Two days later, Community Food Bank picked up another five pallets of dog food, along with as much additional food as its truck could carry.
That’s the ripple effect of Amazon’s generosity.
These pallets mean more than supplies on a shelf. They’re food for a hungry pet and a soft place for a frightened animal to rest. They’re a toy that helps a dog learn to play again and supplies that help a family care for a beloved pet during a challenging time. They’re household basics that free up a little more of someone’s budget for the pet who depends on them.
Sometimes, they can be part of helping a family through a crisis.
A little over a year ago, we met a woman we’ll call Miss Gwen during an extraordinarily difficult time in her life. A survivor of domestic violence, Miss Gwen needed emergency boarding for her two small dogs while she found a safe place to live. The SPCA of Texas cared for her dogs and helped connect her with resources for housing.
Our relationship with Miss Gwen didn’t end there. In the time since, we’ve been able to help with things Miss Gwen and her dogs need, including dog food, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene products, and that support continues today.
“Whenever Miss Gwen comes in, we already know what she and her dogs need,” said Tonja Thurman, Community Impact Manager. “Having Amazon’s donations on hand means we can help her keep taking care of them, no matter what she’s going through.”
Miss Gwen’s story is one example of why caring for animals and caring for people so often go hand in hand. A bag of dog food, a bottle of shampoo, or a package of household supplies may seem like a small thing. But at the right moment, those things can ease a burden, help someone care for the pets they love, and help keep a family together.
Every item the SPCA of Texas can use is also something we don’t have to purchase, stretching our resources further across the many ways we care for animals and support the people who love them throughout North Texas.
“Amazon has been extraordinarily generous to the SPCA of Texas, and their support has touched so many parts of our work,” said Chris Luna, President and CEO of the SPCA of Texas. “More than anything, they continue to show up for us. We are incredibly grateful for their partnership and for everything they help us make possible for animals and people across North Texas.”
More than $1.2 million. More than 650 pallets. And countless individual items put to work helping animals, people, and organizations throughout our community.
From a pallet arriving at our Animal Rescue Center to a bag of dog food going home with someone like Miss Gwen, Amazon’s generosity travels a long way. And every step of that journey has a purpose.
Thank you, Amazon, for making a positive impact in our community and for investing as a good neighbor.
